Sad: Even Timeless Design Eventually Dies...

Until a week ago we had one of the ultimate design coffee grinders: a 20+ year old white Braun blade grinder. But then it's engine went up in smoke and it died. We'll miss the simple shape and the high pitched sound in our kitchen. But it'll stay with us, in the attic.

First mountain bike outing in ages

Living in a tiny village in the pre-alps definitely has some great advantages. Number one: I can finally get back to mountain biking. May is the perfect season for that: everything is blooming and the temperature is perfect for a workout on the bike.

The next thing I'll try is to join my old bike club, the great and famous "RMC Bütschwil", for a ride. That's going to be fun!

Design Is About Removing Stuff

Today's screening of Objectified and the Q&A with Jonathan Ive and Marc Newson was as inspiring as it gets.

Listening to Jonny Ive's childlike voice explaining why designing a computer or - even more so - the iPhone is such a challenge captured the essence of Apple's design philosophy: when one uses an Apple product the design disappears. It's so good that you don't feel it. Actually you only think you don't feel it, because it only appears when needed. It stays out of your way to let you do whatever you are doing. In the end it's about removing stuff.

London Paralized

Quite hilarious how ill-prepared London is to the snow. A bit more than 10cm of white powder and everything stops to work. No buses today all day, trains and tube lines suspended and London Heathrow - one of the biggest airports in the world - has cancelled all the flights until 5pm today.

London Business School has a particularly funny piece of advice to all the people on campus today:
"For those of you on campus today [...] Please take care and try not to walk between buildings unless absolutely necessary to minimise the possibility of accidents in the snow."

The great thing about all this: the city is nice and quite as the streets are almost empty and the snow swallows the remaining sounds. This and all the white scenery - just beautiful!

Shimano Nails Electronic Shifting

A Wired Gadget Blog post is full of praise for Shimano's new electronic shifting. Seems to be amazing. I am no big fan of Shimano myself - it always felt like the Microsoft of the cycling industry. But hey, it seems that after more than 15 years of Mavic's Zap system they finally made electronic shifting that rocks.

Cargo Packed for "Shadows of the Space" Vernissage

Almost a week Justyna and the photographer Karolina Raczynski opened the exhibition of their works at Cargo in Shoreditch. Die Landeier kamen nach Krakau

Hüpf, hüpf: Zürich - München, München . Krakau und da stehen sie. Nett wie er ist, programmierte der Sohnemann die Reise bereits, dass er ab München dabei war - kennt er doch seine reisefiebriege Mamma.
Ankunft in der Ulica J. war noch per Taxi, aber dann gings marsch, marsch zu Fuss durch die Stadt.
Wawel und Altstadt am ersten Tag, das Viertel Kazimierz am zweiten Tag. Kirchen ein und aus - bis zur Genickstarre vor lauter Kostbarkeiten betrachten. Sogar die Dame mit Hermelin gewährte eine Audienz - nicht sehr privat, es waren noch Leute aus allen Herren Länder dabei. Sie war seeehhhrr huldvoll, lächelte, wie man nur vor fünfhundert Jahren lächelte.

Dann war noch ein gewisser Herr Benedikt, der in diesen Tagen die Stadt unsicher machte - auch er lächelte von überall her....

Impreza w "Le Madame"

Komische Stadt dieses Warschau. Gross, Business, Wolkenkratzer, breite Strassen, grau, aber manchmal auch park-weiss - leider noch nicht grün, Scheiss ewiger Winter! Aberaberaber, am Abend geht's doch ab. Super war's im "Le Madame". Lüpfig, so ein richtig schöner Club. Ein bisschen Rote Fabrik, aber schöner und kleiner und schöne Menschen (tja, wir sind hier nicht in Holland...). Aber im Land mit den aus dem Boden poppenden Einkaufszentren, scheint diesen Club genau diese Zukunft zu ereilen: Untergang im Shopping-Center. Aber bis dahin wird hier noch getanzt, jawoll!

In einem langen und sehr lustigen Interview mit Lars von Trier in der Zeit ist folgendes Zitat zu lesen:

Ich glaube, er (Bush) ist in Condoleezza Rice verliebt. Und er träumt davon, von ihr ausgepeitscht zu werden.

Da es im Rest des Interviews in langen Passagen um Sklaverei geht, könnte man - wenn der W wirklich solche Fantasien hat, was mir sehr wahrscheinlich scheint - dies als eine späte aber gerechte Umkehrung der Machtverhältnisse in den USA sehen. Aber vielleicht liessen sich die alten Grossgrundbesitzer schon früher beim Sex von ihren Sklavinnen auspeitschen und demütigten sie endgültig, indem sie ihnen eine gewisse Macht vorspiegelten.

M. zur Zeit in K. hat einen neuen Lieblingssatz, zumindest wenn er englisch spricht: "It's faaaantaaastic!" Sein Mitbewohner P. (weltbekannt aus einer GEO-Spezialnummer zu Polen), dessen Vorlieben noch immer nicht bekannt sind, hat den M. auf jeden Fall schon voll in die k.er Szene eingeführt. M. fühlt sich da so Pudelwohl, dass er sich am Samstag nach durchzechtem Freitag nicht mehr ganz so wohl fühlte...
Das Polnische sprudelt nur so aus M. heraus, auch wenn sich Erasmus Studenten und zugezogene Schweizer immernoch erdreisten, nicht polnisch zu sprechen. Doch das Heimweh ist noch nicht ganz besiegt: Kaffeepulver für geniessbaren Espresso ist fast unbezahlbar und das Nicht-Stattfinden einer Ausstellung junger Fotografen aus der Heimat rief tiefe Enttäuschung hervor. Aber ansonsten alles faaaantaaastic!
